—133-— noch solche Züge von Sittlichkeit und Edelsinn hervorleuchteten, wenn erst der herrliche Christenglaube dies Volk erneuert und wieder-geboren hätte. Aber wenn Landols jetzt in dieser Zeit wieder erschiene, wo wir Christen sind, was würde er wohl von uns sagen? Aeußeres Bildung würde er freilich finden, die Gestalt der Erde würde freilich verändert aussehen. Aber wenn er käme in die Saus- und Spielgelage der Wirthshäuser, in die sogenannten Maibiere, in die Freß-, Sauf- und Spielgesellschaften bei den Hochzeiten, Hausrichtungem Kindtausen u. s. w., ja in die geheimen Sauf- und Spielgesellschasten in den Häusern, in die Spielhöllen an den Badeörtern, in die Saufgelage der Studenten, in die Gesellschaft der Vornehmen, in die so- genannten Festessen, mit welchem in Deutschland alles gefeiert werden muß, wie würde er staunen, daß der Sauf- und Spiel- teufel noch jetzt der herrschende Teufel in Deutschland sei, Treue und Glauben dagegen würde er erloschen finden. Es ist wahr, was jener alte Gesang sagt: aber ach, die Christen- heit führet meistens nur den Namen. Die sind sparsam ausgestreut, die als Gottes reiner Samen, Christum ehren, Christum lieben, sich in Seinem Willen üben! — Nun Gott bessere es. Habe ich das nächste mal Zeit und sind noch keine Nachrichten von den Missionaren da, so will ich weiter hiervon erzählen. Gott segne jeden rechtschaffenen christ- lichen Deutschen und bekehre oder schlage auf den Kopf einen jeden, der den Namen: Deutscher und Christ sich zur Schande führt. Amen.

Loyalty and faith would certainly find him extinguished. It is true, what that old song says: but oh, the Christian community only has the name. They are scattered sparingly, as pure seeds of God, honor Christ, love Christ, and practice in His will! — Now God grant it.
