Davon hat sie nun freilich besonders der Gedanke abgehalten, daß dann, wenn sie wider den Willen des Jams auch wirklich hindurch gedrungen wären-« dieser als der Beherrscher des Küstenreiches, jede Verbindung der Kolonie mit Europa hätte abschneiden können. Indeß, was das eine Mal gelungen war, hätte auch die andern Male gelingen können, zumal da die Herrschaft des Jams nur eine sehr gebrechliche ist. «21uch-hat wohl der Mangel an Sprachkenntniß sie sehr abgehalten, diesen Versuch zu machen; denn hieß es, wenn wir auch durchdringen, wie sollen wir uns den Negern verständlich machen? Jch sehe wohl ein, daß alle diese-Gründe sehr wichtig und sehr ver- nünftig waren und deshalb nehme ich es den Brüdern nicht übel, daß sie eben so und nicht anders gehandelt haben-ide- sonders da sie noch unerfahren waren und durch die überall geschehene Zurückweisung sehr gedrückt in ihrem Gemüthe sein mußten. Und gefreut hat es mich herzlich, daß auch die- welche anderer Meinung waren, sich demüthig und sgehorsam dem Beschlusse der Gesammtgemeine unterworfen habenp Aber das gebe Gott nicht, daß wir die Gallasmisston ausgeben sollten! Nein, wir wollen sie sest halten und mit ermuntertem Eifer fortsetzen. Wir wollen uns nur die Ansied elun g auf Natal als einen Stiilzpunkt gefallen lassen, um von da aus das erste Unternehmen mit verdoppeltem Eifer wieder aufzuneh- men.
