—40- hochgestellten Personen bei der Regierung einführen und sie auf alles, was Mission, Kirche und Schule betrifft, aufmerk- sam machen, wie ich solches ebenfalls gethan habe mit meinem lieben Freunde, Herrn Breutel, Bischof der Briidergemeine aus Berthelsdorf, der sich jetzt hier im Innern des Landes auf einer Inspektionsreise nach den Verschiedenen Missionssiationen befin- det. Auch unsere hiesige lutherische Gemeine wird sich gewiß mit aller Wärme an der guten Sache betheiligen. Die Sache freut mich noch um so mehr, da ich mit Herrn Rebmann, welcher seit mehreren Jahren als Missionar unter den Gallas arbeitet, in Korrespondenz stehe. Herr Rebmann kam hier ganz fremd an, aber ich suchte ihn auch ohne Empfeh- lung am Bord des Schiffes auf und er blieb ein paar Wochen bei mir wohnen. Ostafrika ist das hoffnungsvollste und schönste Missionsseld und mit Gottes Segen bezweifle ich nicht, daß die Kraft, welche nun in dieses Feld eintreten soll, mit den schönsten Segnungen gekrönt wird und einen gewaltigen Einfluß zum Besten dieses Volkes hervorbringen wird. Auch wird fiir die Wissenschaft, Kunst, Gewerbe, Handel Viel Wohlthätiges daraus entspringen. Besonders freut es mich, daß das Schiff Kandaze Eigenthum der Mission ist- Es wird in der That sehr wohlthcitig sein fiir die Gallas, wenn ein ehrlicher Handel mit denselben könnte Statt fin- den. Ia, es wäre sehr gut, wenn christliche, wohlmeinende Herren noch ein paar Schiffe Von Zeit zu Zeit dort hin schickten, um die dortigen Bedürfnisse des Volks zu befrie- digen und ihre Producte im Tauschhandel dort abzuholen. Die Eingeborenen werden bald einsehen-lernen, wer ehrlich mit ihnen handelt und umgeht. Die Franzosen richten dort viel Gräuel an unter den Leuten durch ihr leichtsinniges Leben und ihr schlechtes Beispiel, das die Leute selbst Ver- abscheuen. Indiesen steckt hie und da das Uebel an und macht dann die rechte Bekehrung zum Christenthum sehr schwer. Ich spreche hier Von den Französischen Handels- schissen in jenen Gegenden. Mr. Rebmann arrived unexpectedly here, but I also sought him on the ship's deck and he stayed with me for a few weeks. – East Africa is the most hopeful and beautiful missionary field, and I doubt God's grace will not crown this force that will now enter into this field with the most beautiful blessings. I cannot doubt that it will bring a great influence to this people. – Furthermore, it will bring a great benefit to science, art, trade, and industry. It is particularly gratifying that the Kandaze ship is belonging to the mission. It will be very charitable for the Gallas if there could be a fair trade with them. – I, it would be very good if Christian, friendly men sent a few ships from time to time there to satisfy the needs of the people and take their products in trade. The indigenous people will soon see – learn who is honest in their dealings and avoiding them. – The French are causing a great misery here under their carefree life and bad example, which makes people themselves abhor. – There is something terrible happening there, and it makes the right conversion to Christianity very difficult. – I speak of the French trade in those areas.
